Robert Foley: Heitz, Markham, Pride Mountain, then his own Claret

Robert Foley began working in Napa Valley winemaking in 1977, after viticulture and enology degrees at UC Davis. He spent his first year at Heitz Cellars and then 15 years as founding winemaker at Markham Vineyards. In 1992 he became founding winemaker of Pride Mountain Vineyards, a role he kept for 15 years. He founded his own winery in 1998.

The winery is family-owned and small: Foley makes the wines, and his wife Kelly Kehoe runs the business side with one colleague. It stands at Angwin on Howell Mountain, and visits are by appointment. Its wines are sourced mainly from Napa Valley vineyards, including Howell Mountain, Calistoga, Mount Veeder, Oak Knoll, Carneros and the Solari Vineyard. The cave system on Howell Mountain was completed in 2008 and holds over 1,000 barrels.

Napa Valley AVA: the 85% rule

Napa Valley is an American Viticultural Area in California, established on 28 January 1981. A wine labelled Napa Valley must derive at least 85% of its volume from grapes grown inside the AVA. The federal rules set no list of permitted grapes, so the label does not prescribe a blend.
