Solaia 1987: a bottle from the first decade of Solaia

Solaia 1987 is a Tuscan red from Marchesi Antinori in a 0.75 L bottle. 1987 is not among the years Antinori skipped (1980, 1981, 1983, 1984, 1992). The grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese, and the wine carries the IGT classification.

How the Solaia blend changed after 1978

The first Solaia blend, from 1978 and 1979, was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc. Sangiovese at 20% was introduced in the following years, with the Cabernet ratio adjusted until the current formula was fixed.

The Antinori family dates its winemaking to 1385, when Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Florentine winemakers’ guild. The company is based at Bargino, in San Casciano val di Pesa near Florence.

The vineyard on the Tignanello hillside

The Solaia vineyard covers 20 ha at 350-400 m above sea level, faces southwest and sits on the hillside of Tenuta Tignanello. The soils are alberese, a hard limestone, and galestro, a flaky calcareous clay.

Tenuta Tignanello lies between the Greve and Pesa river valleys and covers about 319 ha, of which about 165 ha are under vine. The Tignanello vineyard, on the same estate, is about 77 ha, so Solaia’s 20 ha is a smaller plot beside it.

Solaia since 1978: years Antinori skipped

Solaia is made only in exceptional vintages, and the first was 1978. The estate ages the current release for about 15 months in new French oak barrels, with lots aged separately before blending.

Questions buyers ask

Where is Solaia made, is it a Bolgheri wine?

No. The Solaia vineyard is on the hillside of Tenuta Tignanello, not in Bolgheri. It covers 20 ha at 350-400 m, facing southwest.

Which grapes are in Solaia 1987?

The grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. The first Solaia blend, from 1978 and 1979, was 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc.

How is Solaia different from Tignanello?

Both come from Tenuta Tignanello. Solaia grows on a 20 ha hillside vineyard and began with 80% Cabernet Sauvignon in 1978. Tignanello, on a vineyard of about 77 ha, is made from a selection of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

When was Solaia first made?

The first vintage was 1978.

Which years was Solaia not made?

Antinori did not produce Solaia in 1980, 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1992. 1987 is not among them.
