Key facts

Henri Jayer Aux Murgers Premier Cru 1986: Nuits-Saint-Georges
A 1986 Nuits-Saint-Georges premier cru from Henri Jayer, now 40 years in bottle. In trade and auction listings the climat is spelled “Meurgers”, and it is sold as Nuits-Meurgers; the official name is Aux Murgers. The bottle is 0.75 L, made from Pinot Noir, a dry red from the Côte d’Or.
The vineyard takes its name from walls built of stones that were removed from the soil when it was planted.

Jayer in 1986: his 42nd vintage
Henri Jayer was born in 1922 in Vosne-Romanée and studied oenology at the University of Dijon in the 1940s. He made 57 vintages between 1945 and 2001, and 1986 was the 42nd of them, made 15 years before his last. He died on 20 September 2006, aged 84.
He also worked the Noirot-Camuzet vines, now Domaine Méo-Camuzet, as a sharecropper from 1945 to 1987, keeping half of the harvest. The vineyards under his own name passed to his nephew Emmanuel Rouget in 1996.

Cellar practice behind a 1986 Jayer
He destemmed fully and used a cold pre-fermentation maceration. He used native yeasts and bottled without filtration. Top cuvées were aged in 100% new oak.

Aux Murgers in Nuits-Saint-Georges
Nuits-Saint-Georges lies in the Côte de Nuits, the northern half of the Côte d’Or escarpment, which produces red wine almost exclusively. That makes this bottle a Pinot Noir red from Burgundy.
Who farms the vines now
After the 1996 transfer, Jayer remained responsible for half the wine bottled under Rouget’s name until 2002. No wine has been made under Jayer’s own name since 2001. Domaine Emmanuel Rouget farms the former Jayer vineyards today, and Rouget’s sons run it: Guillaume in the cellar since 2011 and Nicolas in the vineyards. A 1986 bottle is therefore one of the wines made before that handover.
