Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée 1975: a village wine from before Cros Parantoux was bottled alone

The wine was made three vintages before Jayer first bottled Cros Parantoux on its own in 1978, so fruit from that vineyard still went into the village wine. The grape is 100% Pinot Noir.

The label reads plain Vosne-Romanée, not the name of a single vineyard.

Jayer’s village blend before 1978

Jayer’s Vosne-Romanée was a blend of parcels that included Les Saules, Les Barraux and Les Vigneux. Cros Parantoux fruit also went into it until 1978, when he first bottled that premier cru separately.

Jayer’s methods and his years in Vosne-Romanée

Henri Jayer was born in Vosne-Romanée in 1922 and studied oenology at the University of Dijon in the 1940s. His first vintage was 1945, and he made 57 vintages up to 2001, one in every year. His general practice was full destemming, a cold pre-fermentation maceration, native yeasts and bottling without filtration. The cold maceration lasted 1 to 4 days at about 10 °C.

Jayer after 2001: the Rouget vineyards

He made his last vintage in 2001 and died on 20 September 2006, aged 84. No wine has been made under his own name since. His nephew Emmanuel Rouget took over the vineyards, and Domaine Emmanuel Rouget farms them today.

Vosne-Romanée lies in the Côte de Nuits, the northern half of the Côte d’Or, which makes red wine almost exclusively. The village wine bears the name of the commune where Jayer was born, in Burgundy, France.
