Feist: a London Port house from 1836

This Port comes from the 1978 harvest, 48 years ago, and from a house founded in London in 1836 by the cousins H. Feist and C.J. Feist. Feist Vintage Port 1978 is a red Porto from the Douro, sold in a 0.75 L bottle.

Feist opened an office in Oporto in 1870. From 1921 the Oporto house was managed by J.H. Speich, son-in-law of Carl Feist. Barros acquired the house in 1953 and Sogevinus in 2006. Quinta da Fonte Santa and Quinta de Sant’Ana are vineyard labels linked to Feist.

A 1978 Vintage Port, 48 years on

Vintage Port is made from grapes of a single year. A Vintage Port is therefore one harvest, not a blend of several, and it should not be confused with tawny, Colheita or Late Bottled Vintage. Under the Port rules the grapes must come from the Demarcated Douro Region, and the winemaking must also take place inside it.

IVDP groups its special categories into ruby-style Ports, matured in bottle, and tawny-style Ports, matured in wood.

Sweetness and strength of this Port

Port is a fortified wine. Grape spirit is added during fermentation, which halts it and leaves residual sugar behind. The Port specification requires at least 17.5 g/L of sugar to remain. This bottle is a sweet red.
