Richebourg lies entirely within the commune of Vosne-Romanée, north of the Romanée-Conti vineyard. The appellation was first recognised by the decree of 11 September 1936 and has a delimited area of 8.03 ha. It is not a monopole: the vineyard is shared among roughly ten to twelve owners. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti is the largest, with 3.51 ha.

The estate’s own harvest records for 2009–2019 range from 6,809 bottles in 2013 to 15,742 in 2009.

The appellation is made up of two lieux-dits: Les Richebourg, about 5.05 ha, and Les Verroilles ou Richebourg, about 2.98 ha. The soils are brown limestone, thin on the upper slope and deeper lower down, over hard Premeaux limestone of Jurassic age. The vineyard lies at 250 to 310 m, facing east.

The current specification dates from Decree no. 2011-1534 of 14 November 2011. It allows still red wine only, with Pinot Noir as the main grape. Irrigation is prohibited.

Organic since 1985, Biodyvin-certified since 2016

The vineyards have been farmed organically since 1985. The estate trialled biodynamic methods from 1990 to 2006, adopted them across the estate afterwards and holds Biodyvin certification, obtained in 2016. The share of whole clusters in the estate’s red fermentations never falls below 60%. The Domaine also replants with its own selection of Pinot Noir, propagated from the old vines of Romanée-Conti.
