Château Palmer Historical XIX Century Wine 2007: Palmer with Rhône Syrah
The idea behind Historical XIX Century Wine came from an 1869 Palmer tasted by Thomas Duroux, the estate’s managing director since 2004. It revives the 19th-century Bordeaux practice of adding Hermitage wine to claret. The label reads Vin de Table Français, so there is no appellation on the bottle.
The wine is made mainly from Palmer wine blended with Syrah from the northern Rhône hillsides. The Syrah share is about 10%. The grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah as the grapes.

Why it carries no Margaux appellation
Château Palmer is a Troisième Grand Cru in the 1855 classification, in Margaux-Cantenac. Adding Rhône wine takes the blend outside the rules of the appellation, so the Historical wine is sold without the Margaux name. The first batches were made in 2004. Annual production is about 5,000 bottles.

Is Historical XIX Century 2007 a vintage wine?
The 2007 in the title is the year we list for this bottle. The Palmer grand vin of 2007 is a separate wine, blended from 49% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot. The Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart gives Margaux 2007 a score of 86 and the letter E, which the chart defines as early maturing and accessible. This is a rating of the vintage across the appellation, not a score for the Historical wine.
