Margaux 2003 on the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart

A harvest that began on 10 September

Picking in 2003 began on 10 September, as in 1989, the earliest vintage since 1893. 2003 was a very early vintage with an exceptionally hot summer and a very low yield, and the blend was reinforced by press wine.

The Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart gives Margaux 2003 a score of 88 and the letter I, which stands for an irregular vintage. That number describes the year across the appellation, not this château.

Vines on Garonne gravel

The estate has 87 hectares of red vines in production, with an average age of 35 years, and 72 of its 126 mapped plots are planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. The Margaux vineyard stands on Garonne gravel terraces rising 6 to 33 m above sea level, in a temperate oceanic climate moderated by the Atlantic and the Gironde estuary. Its grand vin is aged an average of twenty-one months in new French oak barrels.

A 0.75 L bottle from the only First Growth in Margaux

Margaux is a left-bank appellation of Bordeaux on the Gironde estuary, reserved for still red wines since its recognition in 1954, with 21 of the 61 classified growths of the 1855 classification. Château Margaux is its only First Growth and carries the 1er Grand Cru Classé rank. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are the grapes of this wine.

Our suggested drinking window is 2011 to 2035, so the wine is inside it today.
