What the 1993 vintage chart says about Pauillac

The Wine Advocate vintage chart gives the 1993 vintage in the Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe group a score of 78 and the letter C. That chart rates the whole vintage in the district, not this bottle. The 90/100 above is a separate score for the wine itself.

Vineyard plantings today

The red vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (81%), Merlot (15%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (1%).

The estate hand-picks its grapes into open baskets and hand-sorts them on vibrating tables after destemming. The grand vin is matured in new oak barrels for about twenty months.

The 1855 ranking and the 1973 promotion

Mouton was ranked a second growth in the 1855 classification. A decree of 21 June 1973 promoted it to first growth, the only promotion in that classification. The estate motto since then reads “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change”. The estate sits in Bordeaux‘s Pauillac district.

The second wine first made in 1993

In 1993 Baroness Philippine de Rothschild created a second wine, first labelled “Le Second Vin de Mouton Rothschild”. Le Petit Mouton is the estate’s second wine, made mainly from younger vines.
