Sauternes 1995 on the vintage chart

Premier Cru Supérieur on Sauternes’ highest ground

Yquem occupies the highest point in Sauternes, at about 80 m, and the site is susceptible to Botrytis cinerea, the noble rot behind sweet Sauternes. The soils are clay and gravel at the surface with limestone in the subsoil.

The Sauternes appellation covers the communes of Barsac, Bommes, Fargues, Preignac and Sauternes. Its rules allow only sweet white wine, from Sémillon, Sauvignon blanc, Sauvignon gris and Muscadelle.

In the 1855 classification it was rated Premier Cru Supérieur, the only Sauternes with that rank. See other first growths.

Six tries and years in oak

The vines are 75% Sémillon and 25% Sauvignon blanc.

Picking goes through the vines in selective passes called tries, about six in an average harvest. The estate ages its wine in oak barrels for about three years.

LVMH owns the estate. Besides the sweet wine, the estate makes a dry white called Ygrec, produced since 1959 and every year since 2004.

Yquem was not made under the château’s name in ten years, among them 1992 and 2012. 1995 is not one of those years.
