Sémillon and Sauvignon blanc at Yquem
Sémillon dominates the plantings, with Sauvignon blanc as the minor partner: roughly three parts to one, so Sémillon makes up about three quarters of the blend and Sauvignon blanc the remaining quarter, as the junior partner.

Noble rot and repeated picking at Yquem
The estate stands on the highest ground in the appellation, about 80 m, and the site is prone to Botrytis cinerea (noble rot). Pickers go through the vines several times, around six passes in an average harvest. These successive selective passes are known as “tries”.

Yquem in the 1855 classification
The 1855 Bordeaux classification rated Yquem Premier Cru Supérieur, the only Sauternes to receive that rating. The wine is sold under the Appellation Sauternes Contrôlée and belongs to Bordeaux.
Where Sauternes sits
The Sauternes appellation covers the communes of Barsac, Bommes, Fargues, Preignac and Sauternes, and makes sweet white wine only.
