Château d’Yquem 1970: a 56-year-old Premier Cru Supérieur from Sauternes
This 0.75 L bottle of Château d’Yquem 1970 comes from Sauternes, where Yquem was the only estate ranked Premier Cru Supérieur in the 1855 classification. It is a sweet white wine.
Marquis Bernard de Lur-Saluces died in 1968, and Comte Alexandre de Lur-Saluces took over the running of the château. Yquem was still owned by the Lur-Saluces family, who had held it since 1785; LVMH became owner in the 1990s.

How Yquem is grown and picked
Yquem is made from Sémillon and Sauvignon blanc. The vines are 75% Sémillon and 25% Sauvignon blanc, on a vineyard of which about 100 ha are in production at any time within the Sauternes appellation.
The estate sits at about 80 m, the highest point in Sauternes, and the site is susceptible to noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). The grapes are picked in successive selective passes (tries), on average about six per harvest. The estate ages its wine in oak barrels for about three years.
