Coutet in Barsac: soil, mist, oak and the 1855 rank

Coutet lies in Barsac, in the north of the Sauternes “golden triangle”, where the Ciron meets the Garonne and the mist favours noble rot. The soil is clay and limestone, which holds water but not heat. Harvest can start up to ten days later than in the Sauternes vineyards.

The vineyard is planted with 75% Sémillon, 23% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle. Picking runs from September to November, over thirty to forty days. As estate practice, the grand vin is aged about 18 months in French oak, 90 to 100% of it new, according to the UGCB.

The 1855 classification placed Coutet among the first growths of Sauternes and Barsac, and the wine carries the 1er Cru Classé rank of that list.

The Baly family at Coutet

The Baly family has owned the estate since 1977, when Marcel Baly and two of his sons, Philippe and Dominique, became the owners. Philippe Baly is co-owner and general manager and has run Coutet since the late 1980s. Since a 1994 agreement, Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A. holds the exclusive distribution rights.
