Château Mouton Rothschild 2012: the first harvest in the new vat room

The 2012 harvest at Château Mouton Rothschild ran from 1 to 15 October and was the first received in the estate’s new vat room, which came into service that year.

The vat room is 70 m long and 16 m high and works by gravity feed. It holds 44 oak vats and 20 stainless-steel vats. It was designed by the scenographer Richard Peduzzi and the Bordeaux architect Bernard Mazières.

Blend and weather of the 2012 vintage

The 2012 blend is 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Conditions were dry from 20 July to 20 September, and rainfall up to the end of September was 26% below the average since 1962: 435 mm against 589 mm.

A first growth from the 1973 promotion

Mouton was ranked a second growth in the 1855 Médoc classification of Bordeaux. A decree of 21 June 1973 promoted it to first growth, the only promotion made to that classification. The estate motto since then reads “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change” (“First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change”). Pauillac holds three of the First Growths: Lafite, Latour and Mouton.
