Mouton in the 1855 classification

Mouton was ranked a second growth in 1855. A decree signed by Jacques Chirac on 21 June 1973 promoted it to first growth, the only promotion in the history of the classification. It is now a Premier Cru Classé (First Growth), filed under 1er Grand Cru Classé. The estate’s motto since that decree reads “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change”: First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change.

This wine is made from four varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. For the estate’s vineyard as a whole, the vineyard is planted to 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Most of the vineyard lies on a hillock called the Plateau de Mouton, 27 m above sea level, on deep gravel over a clay-limestone base. Today the estate matures the grand vin in new oak barrels for about twenty months.

How the 1986 vintage is rated

The Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart scores the 1986 vintage in Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe at 94, with the letter T, which means still tannic or youthful. The chart describes the vintage in the appellation; the 100 points belong to this wine alone. The T rating and the window to 2050 both point to a wine that can still be cellared, as the chart and our drinking window indicate.
