Carruades de Lafite uses a higher proportion of Merlot than the grand vin, and specific plots. Part of the vineyard lies on the Carruades plateau, west of the château. The estate bought that plateau in 1845.

The Rothschild family has owned Lafite since 1868. The estate was ranked a First Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. Pauillac has three First Growths today, and Lafite is one of them.

Lafite’s own vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon 70%, Merlot 25%, Cabernet Franc 3% and Petit Verdot 2%. It sits in three areas: the slopes around the château, the Carruades plateau, and 4.5 ha in Saint-Estèphe.

2000 was an early season with above-average temperatures. Rain in late May and early June brought mildew pressure. August and September brought hot, dry weeks. The grand vin’s 2000 blend is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Merlot. That figure does not apply to the second wine.
