Where Haut-Brion sits among the First Growths

The estate lies in the commune of Pessac, a few miles southwest of the centre of Bordeaux. It was ranked a Premier Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, and among the red wines ranked that year it was the only estate from outside the Médoc. It is also classified for its red wine in the Classification of Graves of 1953, revised in 1959.

The estate’s topsoil is gravel made of small quartz pebbles, lying on a subsoil of clay, sand, limestone and shelly sand. The gravel layer is between 20 cm and more than 3 m thick. The vineyard covers 51 ha, of which 48 ha carry red varieties. The red varieties planted are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, although only the first three are listed for this vintage.
