Sémillon, Sauvignon blanc and noble rot

The grand vin is a sweet white made from Sémillon and Sauvignon blanc. The vines are about 80% Sémillon and 20% Sauvignon blanc.

The vineyard has about 100 ha in production. The estate sits at about 80 m, the highest point in Sauternes, on clay and gravel over limestone. The site is susceptible to Botrytis cinerea, the noble rot behind the style. Grapes are picked in successive passes, on average about six per harvest. The estate also makes a dry white called Ygrec, produced since 1959 and every year since 2004.

The only Premier Cru Supérieur of 1855

In the Bordeaux classification of 1855 Yquem was rated Premier Cru Supérieur. It is the only Sauternes given that rating, and no other Bordeaux estate, red or sweet, holds it. LVMH owns the estate today, and the Lur-Saluces family keeps a minority shareholding.

Vintages without Yquem

Ten years carry no Yquem under the château’s name: 1910, 1915, 1930, 1951, 1952, 1964, 1972, 1974, 1992 and 2012. 1982 is not one of them, so the vintage was bottled as Château d’Yquem.
