The 2007 James Berry Vineyard is a red blend of 41% Grenache, 31% Mourvèdre and 28% Syrah, with 15.8% alcohol by volume. It is a dry red from Saxum, bottled in 0.75 L. James Berry Vineyard now lies in the Paso Robles Willow Creek District AVA, established on 9 October 2014, so the 2007 predates it and is a Paso Robles wine. That AVA covers about 16,622 acres. The blend is Rhône-style.
James Berry Vineyard and the Saxum estate
Saxum is a winery in the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles, California, founded by Justin Smith. The winery sits inside the James Berry Vineyard, planted by Justin’s father, James Berry Smith. The vineyard has high-lime, calcareous soils. Saxum farms without chemical fertilizers, herbicides or pesticides, and irrigation is rarely needed because the vine roots reach deep through fissures in that soil.
The vineyard was first planted in the 1980s with white varieties, and was later planted or replanted to Rhône varieties. Its Rocket Block was planted to Grenache in 1995, and Bone Rock is a steep, rocky shale hillside block. Saxum also works with vineyards beyond James Berry, including G2, Paderewski, Booker, Cayucos Ridge and Heart Stone.
Smith earlier co-founded the Linne Calodo brand with Matt Trevisan before launching Saxum.
