Rothschild and Mondavi, 1978

Opus One was created in 1978 as a joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi. Its first vintage followed in 1979. The two men had met in 1970 at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in Hawaii. The winery building was designed by Scott Johnson and built between 1989 and 1991, and the first wine made within its walls came from the 1991 harvest. Opus One has made a second wine, Overture, since 1993.

Constellation Brands bought the Robert Mondavi company in December 2004. Opus One has since been owned 50/50 by Constellation and Baron Philippe de Rothschild SA, an arrangement confirmed in 2005.

Four parcels in western Oakville

The estate lies in the western part of the Oakville appellation and is planted in four parcels. Two of them are inside To Kalon Vineyard; the Ballestra and River parcels surround the winery. According to the Rothschild group, Opus One has about 55 hectares (136 acres) planted with Bordeaux grape varieties.

What “Napa Valley” on the label guarantees

A wine labelled Napa Valley must come at least 85% from grapes grown inside the appellation, which was established in 1981. Cabernet Sauvignon is the valley’s most planted variety, at 54% of plantings.
