Morey-Saint-Denis and its grand crus

Morey-Saint-Denis has four grand cru appellations of its own: Clos de la Roche, Clos Saint-Denis, Clos des Lambrays and Clos de Tart. It also holds part of Bonnes-Mares, which straddles the border with Chambolle-Musigny. The commune took the name Saint-Denis in 1927, when Morey added it to its own name.

The Côte de Nuits contains 24 grand cru appellations in six communes, and the region produces mainly red wine from Pinot Noir in Burgundy.

The slope behind Clos Saint-Denis

The Côte de Nuits is a tectonic escarpment between the limestone plateaus of the Hautes Côtes to the west and the Bresse plain to the east. The vineyards form a strip about 20 km long that narrows in places to about 200 m wide, running from Dijon in the north to Corgoloin in the south.

Vineyard soils are thin, generally calcareous and well drained. They range from lean, very calcareous soils at the top of the slope to deeper soils, about 0.50 m, decarbonated at the surface on the piedmont. For the wider area, the climate is cool oceanic with continental and southern influences.
