Mouton Rothschild in 1992: first growth, 1855 and 1973

In the 1855 classification Mouton was ranked as a second growth. It was promoted to Premier Cru Classé in 1973, and the estate has used the motto “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change” since then. Pauillac holds three of the First Growths: Lafite, Latour and Mouton.

The grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

The vineyard lies mostly on a hillock called the Plateau de Mouton, which rises to 27 m above sea level, on gravel mingled with sand and some clay over a clay-limestone base. All Mouton has been bottled at the château since 1924, a decision taken by Baron Philippe that ended delivery in barrel to Bordeaux merchants. The same year he asked the poster artist Jean Carlu to design the label, an initiative that was not repeated at the time. Since the 1945 vintage, the label has as a rule carried an original artwork by a contemporary artist, with 2000 and 2003 as exceptions. Today the estate matures the grand vin in new oak barrels for about twenty months, and its vat room holds 44 oak vats and 20 stainless-steel vats.
