Giovanni Gaja established the winery in 1859 in Barbaresco, Piedmont. The single-vineyard wines Sorì San Lorenzo (first released 1967), Sorì Tildìn (1970) and Costa Russi (1978) come from the Barbaresco zone; from 1996 Gaja moved its top Barbaresco cuvées to the Langhe DOC.
Angelo Gaja, born in 1940, studied at the Enological Institute in Alba and at the University of Montpellier, and joined the family business in 1961. As of March 2024, his children Gaia, Rossana and Giovanni, the fifth generation, work alongside him and his wife Lucia.
Gaja’s Piedmont vineyards are given as about 100 ha.
