Key facts

Conteisa and the Gromis property in La Morra
Gaja acquired the Gromis property in La Morra in 1995 to produce Barolo Conteisa Cerequio. The estate’s Barolo vineyards are in Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra, and Gaja bought roughly 28 ha (about 70 acres) in the Barolo zone.

Why the 2005 carries the Langhe name
From 1996 Gaja declassified its top Barolo cuvées from DOCG to Langhe DOC and added about 5–6% Barbera to them. The Langhe DOC rules require a varietal wine to come from at least 85% of the named grape, with up to 15% of other non-aromatic grapes of the same colour allowed alongside it.

The Gaja estate behind Conteisa
Giovanni Gaja founded the winery in Barbaresco, Piedmont, in 1859. In 1937 his grandson, also named Giovanni Gaja, first printed “Gaja” in large red letters on the bottle labels. Angelo Gaja, born in 1940, joined the family business in 1961. He studied at the Enological Institute in Alba and at the University of Montpellier, and holds an economics degree from the University of Turin. In Piedmont the estate farms about 100 ha, and it also owns about 27 ha in Montalcino and about 110 ha in Bolgheri. Annual production across 18 wines is about 350,000 bottles.
