Côte de Nuits 2018 on the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart

Clos de la Roche MCMLV 2018 from a parcel planted in 1955

MCMLV is 1955 written in Roman numerals, the year Henri Lignier planted the parcel behind this wine. Domaine Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche MCMLV 2018 comes from vines that were about 63 years old at the 2018 harvest. It is a 0.75 L bottle of Pinot Noir from a Grand Cru in Morey-Saint-Denis.

The parcel covers 27 ares (0.27 ha) in the lieu-dit Monts Luisants and is planted at 11,000 vines per hectare. The soil is very stony at the surface over a fissured, pearly bedrock slab, and the yield runs from 15 to 25 hl depending on the year.

MCMLV is a separate cuvée from the estate’s regular Clos de la Roche, which comes from vines dating to the mid-1960s. The MCMLV vines are a massale selection of the estate’s best vines, planted by Henri Lignier.

How MCMLV is made

MCMLV is fermented with 30% whole bunches in stainless steel for 20 days. It then spends 21 months on lees and is bottled without filtration or fining. The 2018 is 13.20% alcohol.

Clos de la Roche and the Lignier family

Clos de la Roche has been a grand cru since 8 December 1936. Its 16.9 ha are split across seven climats, among them Monts Luisants, and the appellation grew from 4.57 ha in 1936. It sits in the Cote de Nuits part of Burgundy.

The domaine is based in Morey-Saint-Denis and was founded around 1880 by Jacques Lignier. Laurent Lignier took over in 2006. Biodynamic work covers six parcels totalling 2.5 ha.
