Etienne Sauzet Montrachet Grand Cru 2018: a white grand cru shared by two villages

Montrachet is a Chardonnay-only Grand Cru appellation, recognised on 31 July 1937. Its area is 7.99 hectares, shared between Puligny-Montrachet (about 4 hectares) and Chassagne-Montrachet (about 3.99 hectares). Domaine Etienne Sauzet bottles the 2018 as a dry white Burgundy grand cru, in the standard 0.75 L format.

Montrachet is one of seven grand cru appellations in the Côte de Beaune, alongside Corton, Corton-Charlemagne, Bâtard-Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet. Sauzet’s grand cru range also includes Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet and Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet.

Sauzet in Puligny-Montrachet

Étienne Sauzet (1903–1975) founded the domaine. Gérard Boudot, husband of the founder’s granddaughter Jeanine Boillot, took over in 1974. Today it is run by Émilie Boudot, the founder’s great-granddaughter, and her husband Benoît Riffault.

The domaine farms 15 hectares across Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Cormot-le-Grand. Organic farming began on the domaine’s vineyards in 2006, and biodynamic work followed in 2010.

Sauzet’s cellar practice

The domaine’s wines are fermented in oak and then aged on fine lees. The estate blends each wine shortly before the next harvest and seals its bottles with natural cork finished with wax.
