Second growth in 1855, first growth since 1973

Mouton ranked as a second growth in the 1855 Médoc classification. On 21 June 1973 a decree signed by Jacques Chirac, then Minister of Agriculture, promoted it to first growth. It remains the only promotion in that classification, and the estate’s motto records it: “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change.”

Plateau de Mouton gravel

The vineyard lies mostly on a hillock called the Plateau de Mouton, which rises to 27 m above sea level, on deep gravel over a clay-limestone base. The red vines are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (81%), Merlot (15%), Cabernet Franc (3%) and Petit Verdot (1%). Those are the vineyard shares today.

From vine to bottle at Mouton

Today the estate hand-picks its grapes, sorts them by hand on vibrating tables and matures the grand vin for about twenty months in new oak. Since 1924 all Mouton has been bottled at the château, so the 1990 was too.

Baron Philippe de Rothschild took charge of the estate in 1922. In 1926 the Grand Chai, designed by Charles Siclis, was completed: 100 m long, 25 m wide, with room for up to 1,000 casks on a single level.
