Brunello di Montalcino 2009 on the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart

Cupano Brunello di Montalcino 2009: Sangiovese from Podere Centine

The 2009 vintage of Cupano’s Brunello di Montalcino comes from Podere Centine, a south-facing hill above the Ombrone valley in the south-western part of Montalcino in Tuscany. It is a dry red made from Sangiovese, the only grape the appellation rules allow, and it carries DOCG status.

From Paris to Podere Centine: Tondini and Cousin

Ornella Tondini, a journalist, and Lionel Cousin, a cinematographer, moved from Paris to Montalcino and bought Podere Centine in 1994. The first vineyard was planted in 1997 and the first vintage of Cupano followed in 2000. After his death in April 2021, Ornella Tondini ran the estate with the couple’s three daughters and Andrea Polidoro, Cupano’s winemaker.

Of the 35 ha of land, 6.4 ha are vineyard. The soil is sandy clay over a cobblestone substratum left by ancient sediments of the Ombrone river, and the vines have been organically certified since the start.

Burgundy barrels, no filtration: Cupano’s cellar under the Brunello rules

Under the Brunello disciplinare the wine ages at least 24 months in oak and rests at least four months in bottle. A regular 2009 Brunello could go on sale from 1 January 2014. A Riserva needs six months in bottle and could not be released before 1 January 2015. Cupano does not filter or clarify its wines, ferments with indigenous yeasts and ages them in Burgundy barrels. Its aim is “wines for aging, in a true French style”, influenced by Burgundian practice and Henri Jayer.
