Brunello di Montalcino 2006 on the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart

Poggio di Sotto Brunello di Montalcino 2006: a five-star vintage

The Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino rates 2006 at five stars, and Parker’s vintage chart gives it 97.

The wine is Brunello di Montalcino, a DOCG red that the appellation rules allow to be made only from Sangiovese. The Poggio di Sotto vineyards are planted with nothing else: no international varieties and no white grapes.

Castelnuovo dell’Abate, 190–440 m on the slopes of Amiata

Poggio di Sotto is at Castelnuovo dell’Abate, in the southern part of the Montalcino zone, on steep ridges at the foot of Mount Amiata. Its vines grow between 190 and 440 metres above sea level. Soils run from galestro (clayey schist) and grey marl on the lower plots to compact clays with mineral conglomerates higher up.

The estate covers 48 hectares, 20 of them vineyard. Its rows hold 182 Sangiovese biotypes, found in a survey in 2012–2013.

The 2006 is a Palmucci-era wine. Piero Palmucci bought the estate in 1989, and Claudio Tipa acquired it from him in 2011.

The 2006 season in Montalcino

The Consorzio’s report describes persistent rain from April to June, intense heat in July and a cooler August. Early September was hot, rain came at the start of the second half of the month, then the weather settled and picking began. The Consorzio titled its report on the year “one of the greatest years ever”.

The Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart gives Brunello di Montalcino 2006 a score of 97 and the letter R, meaning ready to drink, a rating of the vintage across the appellation, not of this wine.

Inside its 2016–2031 window, released no earlier than 2011

Our suggested drinking window is 2016 to 2031, so the wine is inside it now.

Brunello must spend at least two years in oak and four months in bottle, and for the 2006 vintage could not be released before 1 January 2011. The estate ferments spontaneously in conical oak vats and ages in 30-hectolitre Slavonian oak.
