La Viña de Andrés Romeo 2005: one plot of 1985 Tempranillo

La Viña de Andrés Romeo 2005 comes from a single vineyard planted in 1985 by the father of Benjamín Romeo, in the lower part of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, close to the Ebro. It is a dry red made from 100% Tempranillo and sold under the DOC Rioja designation. The bottle is 0.75 L.

Gravel by the Ebro at 450 m

The vines stand on alluvial soil with a high gravel content, at about 450 m elevation. That differs from the estate’s slope vineyards, which lie around San Vicente on the Sierra de Cantabria and are mostly clay-limestone. The vineyard holding is split into many small plots.

Bodegas Contador and Benjamín Romeo

Romeo founded Bodega Contador in 1995 and bought a centuries-old cave beneath the castle of San Vicente. The first La Cueva del Contador was made in 1996 and the first Contador in 1999. He was winemaker at Artadi from 1985 to 2000 and left in 2000 to concentrate on his own project. The bodega practises organic viticulture.

This 2005 is not the Contador wine itself. It is a separate cuvée from a different plot.

Label history and how to read this bottle

The La Viña de Andrés Romeo brand has been discontinued. The wine from the same plot is now released as La Liende, one of four single-vineyard reds launched in 2016. A 2005 bottle therefore belongs to the earlier labelling of that vineyard.
