Marchesi Antinori Tignanello 1993: a Tuscan red made outside Chianti Classico

Marchesi Antinori Tignanello 1993 is a dry red from Tuscany, made outside the Chianti Classico rules. It is IGT Toscana, in a 0.75 L bottle. Tignanello was not made in 1972, 1973, 1974, 1976, 1984, 1992 and 2002.

The wine is made from a selection of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Antinori ages Tignanello for about 13 months in mostly new French oak barrels with a small share of Hungarian oak, then a further 12 months in bottle.

Why Tignanello 1993 is not a Chianti Classico

Tignanello was first produced in 1970 as “Chianti Classico Riserva Vigneto Tignanello”. In 1971 it became a Tuscan red table wine, made by Piero Antinori and the oenologist Giacomo Tachis with malolactic fermentation and French oak.

The current blend of the three red varieties has been unchanged since 1982. That puts 1993 inside the period of the present formula.

Tenuta Tignanello and its vineyard

The estate lies between the Greve and Pesa river valleys and covers about 319 ha, of which about 165 ha are under vine. The Tignanello vineyard itself covers about 77 ha at 350-400 m above sea level, facing south-west, on limestone-rich soils. The Solaia vineyard, 20 ha at the same altitude and also facing south-west, lies on the same hillside of the estate. Since 2011 the Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva has been made exclusively from grapes of the Tignanello vineyard.
