Key facts

Henri Jayer Échezeaux Grand Cru 1996 and the year of the transfer
In 1996 Henri Jayer handed his vineyards to his nephew Emmanuel Rouget. This bottle of Henri Jayer Échezeaux Grand Cru 1996 is a 0.75 L Pinot Noir from the Côte d’Or, classed Grand Cru.
Jayer did not stop working in 1996. He stayed responsible for half of the wine bottled under Rouget’s name until 2002.

Les Cruots and Les Treux: Jayer’s Échezeaux parcels
Jayer began bottling under his own label in the 1950s from a family inheritance of 7.4 acres (3.0 ha). It included parcels in Échezeaux and in Les Beaux Monts. His Échezeaux holdings included parcels in Les Cruots and Les Treux.
Domaine Emmanuel Rouget also makes Échezeaux and started its own production in 1985, before the 1996 transfer. Rouget’s Échezeaux today comes from parcels in the same two lieux-dits, Les Cruots and Les Treux.

Destemmed, cold-soaked, new oak: Jayer’s cellar method
Across his wines, Jayer destemmed fully and used a cold pre-fermentation maceration of 1 to 4 days at about 10 °C. He used native yeasts and bottled without filtration. His top cuvées aged in 100% new oak for about 18 months.

Henri Jayer, 1922 to 2006
Jayer was born in 1922 in Vosne-Romanée in the Côte de Nuits, and studied oenology at the University of Dijon in the 1940s. From 1945 he worked as a sharecropper (métayer) on the Noirot-Camuzet vineyards, now Domaine Méo-Camuzet, and kept half of the harvest. He made 57 vintages between 1945 and 2001 and died on 20 September 2006. Domaine Emmanuel Rouget farms the former Jayer vineyards today.
