Échezeaux in Flagey-Échezeaux

Échezeaux is one of two grand cru appellations of the commune of Flagey-Échezeaux; the other is Grands Échezeaux. The commune belongs to the Côte de Nuits, the hillside that runs from Dijon in the north to Corgoloin in the south. The Côte de Nuits contains 24 grand cru appellations spread over six communes, and it produces mainly red wine from Pinot Noir.

The vineyards of the Côte de Nuits form a strip about 20 km long that narrows in places to about 200 m wide. The Côte is an escarpment that separates the limestone plateaus of the Hautes Côtes, at 400 to 500 m, from the Bresse plain at about 250 m. Vineyard soils are thin, generally calcareous and well drained.

The climate is cool oceanic with continental and southern influences, with about 750 mm of rain a year and a mean annual temperature of 10.5 °C. The Climats du vignoble de Bourgogne, which cover the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 4 July 2015.

The six communes with grand cru vineyards are Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Flagey-Échezeaux and Vosne-Romanée.
