Emmanuel Rouget Échezeaux Grand Cru 2004 from Henri Jayer’s nephew

Emmanuel Rouget is the nephew of Henri Jayer and trained under him. Jayer transferred his vineyards to Rouget in 1996, and the estate is based in Flagey-Échezeaux. This bottle is its Échezeaux 2004, a dry red made from Pinot Noir and sold in the 0.75 L format. It is a Grand Cru.

Rouget holds about 1.4 ha of Échezeaux, including parcels in Les Cruots and Les Treux. Jayer’s last vintage was 2001, so the 2004 is Rouget’s own work.

Échezeaux, a 1937 appellation next to Grands Échezeaux

The Échezeaux appellation was created in 1937 and lies in the commune of Flagey-Échezeaux, in the Côte de Nuits. It covered 34.79 ha in production in 2008. Grands Échezeaux is the commune’s other grand cru.

How Rouget makes its Échezeaux

The grapes are destemmed and fermented in concrete vats. The wines are then aged for about 20 months or more in oak, with a high share of new barrels.
