Côte de Nuits 2005 on the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart

Échezeaux from Henri Jayer’s vineyards, 2005

In 1996 Henri Jayer transferred his vineyards to his nephew Emmanuel Rouget. This 2005 is a red Pinot Noir from Flagey-Échezeaux in the Côte de Nuits, and it carries the Grand Cru status of the Échezeaux appellation, which was created in 1937.

Les Cruots and Les Treux: Rouget’s Échezeaux

The wine comes from parcels in Les Cruots and Les Treux. The appellation covered 34.79 ha in production in 2008 and had about 80 owners in the early 2000s. The 2005 vintage is among the wines from those parcels, so this bottle is part of that line.

Rouget and Henri Jayer

Emmanuel Rouget is the nephew of Henri Jayer and began working for him in 1976. He started producing wine on his own account in 1985. After Jayer’s last vintage in 2001 the wines from those vineyards moved to the Domaine Emmanuel Rouget label. The domaine sits in the same commune as the appellation. It is based in Flagey-Échezeaux, and its own site says it is managed by Emmanuel Rouget with his sons Nicolas and Guillaume.

The estate destems its grapes and ferments them in concrete vats, then ages the wine about 20 months in oak with a high share of new barrels.
