Mouton Rothschild in 1978: a First Growth five years after promotion

Mouton was ranked a second growth in the 1855 classification. A decree signed on 21 June 1973 promoted it to first growth, and that remains the only promotion in the 1855 Médoc classification. The 1978 harvest therefore came five years after the change. The estate motto dates from the same promotion: “Premier je suis, second je fus, Mouton ne change” (“First I am, second I was, Mouton does not change”).

Baron Philippe de Rothschild took charge of the estate in 1922 and held it until his death in 1988, so the 1978 vintage was made under his ownership. In 1978 he also founded Opus One in Napa Valley as a joint venture with Robert Mondavi.

The estate matures its grand vin in new oak barrels for about twenty months, and it has bottled all its wine at the château since 1924. Since the 1945 vintage, the label has as a rule reproduced an original artwork by a contemporary artist.
