Miani ‘Calvari’ Refosco 2004: a back vintage from a parcel no longer farmed

Calvari is the name of the vineyard parcel the grapes came from, and the wine was bottled from that parcel alone. Enzo Pontoni gave it up in 2015 under the terms of a purchase agreement for the Zitelle vineyard, so the 2004 is a back vintage of a wine that is no longer made.

It is a dry red, single-varietal Refosco (Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso), classed as DOC. Our suggested drinking window is 2014 to 2029.

Enzo Pontoni and the Buttrio estate

Miani is a small estate in Buttrio, in the Colli Orientali del Friuli area of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Pontoni is owner, vigneron and winemaker. He took over full time in 1989 after his father’s death, leaving a career as a mechanic. The estate is named after the maiden name of his mother. It farms roughly 13 hectares of vines in and around Buttrio, and the first Miani bottles were produced in 1985.

Production is small: around 7,000 bottles a year. Yields are about 10 hectoliters per hectare, and farming is organic.

Calvari in new oak, bottled by vineyard

Calvari was aged in 100% new oak. Miani bottles its wines vineyard by vineyard. Cossut is the single-vineyard Refosco first released in 2015, the year Calvari was given up.
