Elena Walch Beyond The Clouds Bianco 2019: a barrique-fermented Alto Adige white
The 2019 Beyond The Clouds is a dry white from Alto Adige with the DOC designation Alto Adige Bianco. It is predominantly Chardonnay, joined by a selection of the estate’s finest white grapes.
It is sold here in the 0.75 L bottle. The wine also comes in 0.375 L and 1.5 L formats.
Picked at Chardonnay ripeness, fermented in new barriques
The grapes are selected in the vineyard and harvested entirely by hand. The varieties are picked as soon as the Chardonnay reaches optimum maturity, then crushed, pressed and fermented together in new French oak barriques.
Part of the wine goes through malolactic fermentation. It then matures for 10 months in barrique with regular lees stirring, and spends at least 6 months in bottle before release.
Elena Walch and the first Beyond The Clouds
The estate is in family hands, now in its fifth generation, in Termeno (Tramin), South Tyrol, Italy. Elena Walch, an architect born in Milan, married into a wine family in Tramin and introduced Guyot training, high-density planting and French oak barriques there. Her daughters Julia and Karoline run the estate today.
The first Beyond The Clouds vintage was 2000, Alto Adige’s first white super cuvée. The estate’s two single vineyards (Vigna) are Castel Ringberg in Caldaro and Kastelaz in Tramin.
