Leroy Gevrey-Chambertin 2009: Pinot Noir from the Côte de Nuits

The Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart gives red Côte de Nuits 2009 a score of 95. This 0.75 L bottle of Leroy Gevrey-Chambertin 2009 is a dry red made from Pinot Noir under the AOC label. It comes from the Côte de Nuits, the hillside of the Côte-d’Or département in Burgundy that runs from Dijon in the north to Corgoloin in the south. No Premier Cru or Grand Cru vineyard is named, so this is the village appellation.

Gevrey-Chambertin and the Leroy vineyards there

A royal ordinance of King Louis-Philippe in 1847 let the village add the name of Chambertin to its own, which gave Gevrey-Chambertin. Nine grand cru appellations lie in the commune, among them Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze and Mazis-Chambertin.

Domaine Leroy bought about 2.5 ha of vineyards from Domaine Philippe Rémy in Gevrey-Chambertin around 1989. The estate itself dates from 1988, when Lalou Bize-Leroy bought Domaine Charles Noëllat in Vosne-Romanée.

Check the label: Domaine Leroy or Maison Leroy

Two separate businesses carry the name. Domaine Leroy is the estate in Vosne-Romanée. Maison Leroy is a négociant house in Auxey-Duresses that bottles wines selected from other growers. A Leroy-labelled Gevrey-Chambertin can come from either, so the label shows which one made this bottle.
