Hubert de Montille Pommard Les Rugiens 1989: a Premier Cru from the lawyer-vigneron
This is a 1989 Pommard Premier Cru Les Rugiens, a dry red from Pinot Noir, bottled at 0.75 L under the name of Hubert de Montille. It comes from the Côte de Beaune, in the commune of Pommard. Rugiens is one of the Premier Cru sites of the village.
Hubert de Montille was a Dijon lawyer who rebuilt the family vineyards alongside his legal career. He took over the family estate in 1947, at 17, after his father’s death.

Hubert de Montille’s estate in 1989
Hubert ran the estate until he retired in 2002, and his son Étienne then took over. Étienne began working there in 1983, at 20, and became co-manager in 1995, the year organic conversion began. Biodynamic farming is now practised across the estate’s entire vineyard. The estate had 9 ha when Étienne took over in 2002. In the 19th century the family held about 30 ha across the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits, but phylloxera and later losses had cut the estate to about 2.5 ha by 1945.

Rugiens-Bas, 1.02 ha
The estate’s Pommard Rugiens parcel is Rugiens-Bas, 1.02 ha, with vines of about 50 years. Pinot Noir is grown around Beaune, Pommard, Volnay and Ladoix.
