Château Gruaud-Larose 2009: Saint-Julien in a year rated 99
The Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart gives the 2009 vintage in Saint-Julien a score of 99 out of 100. The chart scores Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe together, and describes the 2009s as early maturing and accessible. Château Gruaud-Larose 2009 is a dry red built on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The 99 is the vintage score for the appellation group, not a score for the wine.

A Second Growth of 1855
Gruaud-Larose is one of the five Second Growths of Saint-Julien in the 1855 Bordeaux classification, alongside Ducru-Beaucaillou, Léoville-Barton, Léoville-Las Cases and Léoville-Poyferré. The commune has no First Growth, so Second Growth is the highest rank held there. On this site the château sits under 2ème Grand Cru.
The 1855 ranking is separate from the appellation rules. Saint-Julien became an appellation by decree on 14 November 1936 and covers still red wine only.

82 hectares in one plot under the Merlaut family
The 2009 was made under the Taillan Group, owned by the Merlaut family, which has held the estate since 1997. The estate’s origins date to 1725. The vineyard covers 82 hectares in a single plot on a rise, unchanged since the 1855 classification. Its soil is Garonne gravel of the Quaternary period.
The estate also makes a second wine, Sarget de Gruaud Larose.

Cabernet-led blend on Médoc gravel
Saint-Julien is a Médoc appellation of Bordeaux, between Pauillac to the north and Margaux to the south. Its specification names Cabernet Sauvignon as the dominant variety, with Merlot present and Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot used in blending. The gravel soils of the commune lie over limestone, marl and clay.
