Château Margaux 2002: picked from 30 September
Picking at Château Margaux began on 30 September in 2002. This is a 0.75 L bottle of the 2002 grand vin, the red wine of the only First Growth in the Margaux appellation. It is classed as 1er Grand Cru Classé, the rank the estate received in the 1855 Bordeaux classification.

The 2002 blend
Flowering in 2002 was hit by adverse weather, with severe millerandage in the old Merlot plots. The resulting grand vin contains very little Merlot, one of the lowest proportions in its history, and is essentially Cabernet Sauvignon. The grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
The estate ages its grand vin an average of twenty-one months in new French oak barrels, and around 40% of the harvest goes into it.

Margaux 2002 on the vintage chart
The Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart gives Margaux 2002 a score of 88, with the letter T: still tannic or youthful.

Mentzelopoulos ownership
The Mentzelopoulos family has owned Château Margaux since 1977. In 2003, one year after this vintage, Corinne Mentzelopoulos bought back the majority stake and became sole shareholder.
Margaux appellation: close to 60% Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon occupies close to 60% of the Margaux vineyard area, so a 2002 grand vin that is essentially Cabernet follows the appellation’s main grape. The appellation covers still red wine only and holds 21 of the 61 classified growths of 1855. More wines from the region are listed under Bordeaux.
