Edition No. 4 and the 2018 distillery building

The Macallan is made at Easter Elchies, Craigellachie, in Moray. Edition No. 4 was a tribute to the architecture of the new Macallan distillery at Easter Elchies, which opened the same year. The building was designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners. Edrington owns the distillery, having bought Highland Distillers in 1999 together with William Grant & Sons. Its principal shareholder is the charitable Robertson Trust.

Why the label says Speyside

Under the Scotch Whisky Regulations 2009, the name Speyside may be used only for Scotch whisky distilled in that region. The regulations define it as specific wards of Moray Council plus the Badenoch and Strathspey ward of Highland Council. The region lies wholly within the Highlands, so either name is legal for whisky made there. The Macallan estate at Easter Elchies covers 485 acres, with the River Spey flowing alongside for almost 2 miles. Easter Elchies House on the estate was built in 1700 by Captain John Grant.
