A distillation from the quiet years
In 1996 Ardbeg ran for only a few weeks a year. Under Allied Distillers, production between 1989 and 1996 was minor and sporadic. Glenmorangie bought the distillery in 1997 and restarted production, so spring 1996 was one of the last distillations before that change. The spirit therefore sat in ex-bourbon wood through the whole of the ownership change, until bottling in July 2018.
The Committee offer of 2 October 2018
Ardbeg offered this bottling to Ardbeg Committee members on 2 October 2018. The Committee was formed in 2000, the year Ardbeg Ten Years Old launched.
Ardbeg, from 1815 to the 1996 spirit
John Macdougall founded the distillery in 1815 on the south coast of Islay. Thomas Buchanan, a Glasgow merchant, bought it in 1838, and Alexander Macdougall & Co Ltd acquired it in 1922. Production ceased in 1981 and small-scale distilling resumed in 1989, the period this spirit comes from. Glenmorangie plc bought the distillery in 1997, and LVMH acquired Glenmorangie, with Ardbeg, on 28 December 2004. An expansion in 2021 raised the number of stills from two to four. Ardbeg’s malt is heavily peated, at about 50-65 ppm, and the water comes from Loch Uigeadail. Browse more bottles in Scotch whisky.
