Key facts

Fattoria Brena Sopra 2019: Pinot Nero from 700 metres near Cortona
Sopra is one of Fattoria Brena’s two Pinot Neros, 100% Pinot Noir (Pinot Nero) labelled IGT Toscana. This bottle is the 2019 vintage in the standard 0.75 L format. The second wine from this grape is a smaller selection called Sopra di Sopra.

Vineyard and soil of the Cortona estate
The estate is at San Pietro a Dame, in Cortona, in the province of Arezzo. It lies at about 700 m above sea level between the Valdichiana and the Valtiberina. The vineyard covers about 1.5 ha, on medium-textured soil of clay and sand with south-east exposure.
The first vineyard of Pinot Nero went in during 1999, with Burgundy clones. More Burgundy clones followed in 2014 and further clones in 2020. A 2019 wine can only come from the 1999 and 2014 plantings.

Sheep in the vineyard, no consultants in the cellar
Angelo bought the property in 1951, and his grandson Giancarlo Bucci runs the winery today.
Sheep graze the vineyard in winter, and the estate uses no synthetic fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides. The estate is not certified organic. It uses no technical consultants in winemaking.

How Sopra is made
The estate ferments Sopra in small separate lots in cement and open tonneaux, then ages it 12 months in cement and at least 24 months in bottle, with no clarification or filtration.
