Saint Cyr Chénas ‘Les Journets’ 2018 in a 1.5 L bottle
Les Journets is a single parcel in Chénas, planted with 100% Gamay on white granite. It faces south to southeast on a plateau. Domaine Saint Cyr bottles the 2018 from it as a dry red, and this listing is the 1.5 L format.
The yield is 35 hl/ha, and the annual production is about 4,000 bottles.
23 days of cold carbonic maceration for Les Journets
The grapes go through cold carbonic maceration for 23 days. Fermentation runs on native yeasts, starting on day 15, and malolactic fermentation happens naturally. The wine is unfiltered and bottled with minimal sulfites. Half of it spends 10 months in old oak barrels.
The domaine began trialling cold carbonic fermentation in 2017 with this very Chénas. Since 2019 all of its red wines are made that way.
Domaine Saint Cyr and the Chénas appellation
The domaine sits in Anse, at the southern edge of Beaujolais. Pierre Saint-Cyr founded the family farm in 1949, and Raphaël Saint-Cyr, the fourth generation, took over in 2008 and moved it to certified organic viticulture. The domaine farms 23 hectares.
Chénas is one of the ten Beaujolais crus and the smallest of them by area. Its appellation covers still red wines made principally from Gamay, and Les Journets is among its named lieux-dits.
Chénas 2018: an early-maturing vintage
The Wine Advocate vintage chart rates Beaujolais Chénas 2018 at 93 and describes the year as early maturing and accessible.
