Key facts

Ermitage Le Pavillon 1998: a magnum from a 4 ha plot
This 1.5 L magnum comes from Le Pavillon, a plot of about 4 ha in the Les Bessards lieu-dit of the Hermitage hill. Ermitage Le Pavillon M. Chapoutier 1998 is a red Hermitage made from 100% Syrah. Le Pavillon is a single-plot selection within Chapoutier’s Hermitage range.

Les Bessards and the soil of Le Pavillon
Les Bessards lies on the western part of the Hermitage hill at Tain-l’Hermitage. The appellation covers about 140 ha on the south-west side of a steep granite hill. The soil of Le Pavillon is a fine layer of sediment over a granite subsoil.

Hermitage: 1937 and the grape rules
Hermitage was established in its current appellation form in 1937. Syrah is the only red grape allowed in Northern Rhône red AOC wines; Hermitage rules permit up to 15% Marsanne and Roussanne, while Le Pavillon is 100% Syrah.

The house: M. Chapoutier in Tain-l’Hermitage
M. Chapoutier is a winery and négociant based in Tain-l’Hermitage, run by Michel Chapoutier since about 1990. The house is the largest vineyard owner in the Hermitage appellation, which covers about 140 ha. The house farms about 389 to 390 ha of its own vines, organically or biodynamically, and it favours single-variety wines over blends, even in appellations where blending is traditional. Chapoutier began converting its estate to biodynamic viticulture in 1991.
