Chapelle-Chambertin among the Gevrey-Chambertin grand crus

Chapelle-Chambertin is one of nine grand cru appellations of Gevrey-Chambertin: Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Chapelle-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin, Latricières-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Mazoyères-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin. The whole Côte de Nuits holds 24 grand cru appellations in six communes. A royal ordinance of King Louis-Philippe in 1847 allowed Gevrey to add the name of Chambertin, which is how the village became Gevrey-Chambertin.

Chapelle-Chambertin: 5.48 ha in the south of Gevrey

The Chapelle-Chambertin appellation was created in 1937 and covers 5.48 ha. It lies in the southern part of the Gevrey-Chambertin commune, east of Chambertin-Clos de Bèze and north of Griotte-Chambertin. The Côte de Nuits vineyards form a strip about 20 km long on a limestone escarpment, narrowing in places to about 200 m. Soils are thin, generally calcareous and well drained. The area produces mainly red wine from Pinot Noir. The climate is cool oceanic, with continental and southern influences and about 750 mm of rain a year.
