Côte de Nuits 2002 on the Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart
Category: Côte de Nuits, Burgundy, France, Grand Cru, Pinot Noir, Red, Wine

La Grande Rue 2002: a monopole grand cru between La Tâche and Romanée-Conti
La Grande Rue is a 1.65 ha grand cru in Vosne-Romanée that belongs to a single owner, Domaine Lamarche. This is its 2002, a 0.75 L bottle of dry red Pinot Noir. The vineyard lies between La Tâche to the south and La Romanée and Romanée-Conti to the north, and faces east at 250 to 310 m.
The estate, formerly Domaine François Lamarche, is in Vosne-Romanée in the Côte de Nuits, Burgundy. It was founded in 1797.

Monopole, and a grand cru only since 1992
Monopole means that one estate owns the whole vineyard. The Lamarche family bought La Grande Rue at auction from the Liger-Belair family in 1933 and gave it to Henri Lamarche as a wedding present.
When the AOC classification was drawn up in the 1930s, Henri Lamarche did not apply for grand cru status. He saw nothing to gain except perhaps higher taxes, so the vineyard stayed premier cru. The INAO approved the grand cru application in 1989, and La Grande Rue was decreed Grand Cru on 8 July 1992, with effect backdated to the 1991 vintage. The 2002 was therefore a grand cru wine.

One of six grand crus of Vosne-Romanée
La Grande Rue is one of six grand cru appellations of the commune. The other five are Romanée-Conti, La Romanée, La Tâche, Richebourg and Romanée-Saint-Vivant. The Côte de Nuits contains 24 grand cru appellations in total, spread over six communes, and it produces mainly red wine from Pinot Noir.

Côte de Nuits 2002: rated 94, ready to drink
The Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart gives red Côte de Nuits 2002 a rating of 94, with the letter R, which the chart defines as ready to drink. That figure describes the vintage across the region, not this bottle, and it is a separate scale from a score for an individual wine.
Questions buyers ask
Is Domaine Lamarche La Grande Rue 2002 ready to drink?
The Robert Parker Wine Advocate vintage chart marks red Côte de Nuits 2002 with the letter R, meaning ready to drink. This is a rating of the vintage in the region, not of this wine.
What grape is La Grande Rue made from?
La Grande Rue is planted with Pinot Noir, and this is a dry red wine.
Is La Grande Rue a grand cru?
Yes. La Grande Rue is one of the six grand cru appellations of Vosne-Romanée, alongside Romanée-Conti, La Romanée, La Tâche, Richebourg and Romanée-Saint-Vivant.
What does Monopole mean for La Grande Rue?
It means the vineyard has a single owner. La Grande Rue, 1.65 ha, is owned solely by Domaine Lamarche, formerly Domaine François Lamarche.
Was La Grande Rue a grand cru in 2002?
Yes. It was decreed Grand Cru on 8 July 1992, with effect backdated to the 1991 vintage, so the 2002 was already a grand cru wine.
