Clos Saint-Denis and the canons of Vergy

The vineyard was originally owned by the Collégiale de Saint-Denis de Vergy. Its soils are limestone, clay and marl, planted mainly to Pinot Noir. It became an appellation in 1936.

It is one of the grand crus of Morey-Saint-Denis, in the Côte de Nuits, the hillside of Burgundy that produces mainly red wine from Pinot Noir.

The Magnien family and their 4.5 hectares

Stéphane Magnien is the fourth generation of the family to run the domaine and has been in charge since 2008, when he took over from his father Jean-Paul. Jean-Paul and his wife Marie-Odile were the generation that first bottled the family’s own wines; before that the wines were sold to négociants. The domaine farms 4.5 hectares of regional, village, premier cru and grand cru sites. Its two grands crus are Clos Saint-Denis and Charmes-Chambertin.

The domaine holds 0.3 hectares in Clos Saint-Denis. Average vine age across the domaine is around 50 years.
